Naval expedition “Lusitania”: Portugal – Cabo Verde – Brasil

The David Melgueiro Association (ADM)  , in partnership with the National Association of Cruisers (ANC), will realize the “Lusitânia Expedition” with the intention to homage the national heroes Sacadura Cabral and Gago Coutinho in the centenary of the aerial crossing of the South Atlantic, remaking the same trip by sea, aboard ten sailing boats, whose owners are members of the associations.

The project was presented in Lisbon, at the Museu de Marinha, Pavilhão das Galeotas, on 2022-02-10.

The ADM sailing boats will count in their crews, with students that took part in the project “Navegar”, course of sailing cruising for adults, prepared and trained by the Cap. José Mesquita

At the same event, the book “A Viagem Maravilhosa de Gago Coutinho e Sacadura Cabral”, by Menezes Ferreira, was presented, in a re-edition of the MIL – Movimento Internacional Lusófono.

– On 26 and 27 March the sailing boats are parked at the Oeiras Recreational Port, “Oeiras Marina”, being available to be visited with their crews.

– On the 27th, a great party will take place at the “Porto de Recreio de Oeiras”:

– 15H30, blessing of the sailing boats, by the Navy Chaplain Father José Ilídio Costa.

– 4.30 p.m., Comdt. José Mesquita will present the Lusitânia Expedition project. In the afternoon, there will be musical entertainment by the Talaíde Musical and Sports Solidarity Group and the singer Jorge Mendes accompanied by José Braga on guitar and João Machado on Portuguese guitar.

– 30th March, 12h00: next to Belém Tower, the sailboats will make a symbolic departure, then return to Oeiras Marina.

– 3rd April: the sailing boats are in front of the Tower of Belém and the monument of the Crossing, integrated in an AERO-NAVAL FESTIVAL. At 10H30, they leave for the voyage Lisbon -Rio de Janeiro.

Navy ships and Air Force aircraft, as well as the boats of the Tagus Navy and numerous sailing boats, will escort the departing fleet of sailing boats.

The sailing ship “Zarco” and the sailing ship “Polar”, two sailing ships of the Naval School, will accompany the expedition during the leg from Lisbon to Funchal.
